Let's Discuss: Medicom Mafex #239 Spider-Man 2099 Action Figure

I think that this Spider-Man has been one of the most anticipated figures of 2025. When I received notification that my order was about to be processed and shipped, I will admit that I got very excited. The fact that this figure arrived at the same time as three others I was waiting for didn't diminish the anticipation level one bit for me.

Spider-Man 2099 was created by writer Peter David and artist Rick Leonardi, debuting in The Amazing Spider-Man #365 (August 1992) in a preview story. His first full appearance and solo story came shortly after in Spider-Man 2099 #1 (November 1992), published under Marvel’s short-lived 2099 imprint.

Miguel O’Hara worked for the powerful megacorporation Alchemax, where he was tasked with creating genetically enhanced humans. After a lab accident and a betrayal by his corrupt boss, Miguel’s DNA was spliced with that of a spider. Unlike Peter Parker’s origin via radioactive spider bite, Miguel’s transformation was rooted in genetic manipulation, giving him enhanced strength, speed, agility, fangs, retractable talons, and organic webbing. He also possesses heightened vision and hearing, though he's sensitive to light.

Distinct from his predecessor, Miguel isn’t motivated by guilt over a lost loved one, but rather by a growing sense of justice in a brutal world dominated by oppressive corporations. His costume—a sleek, dark blue bodysuit with a red skull-like spider emblem—was originally a Día de los Muertos costume made of unstable molecules, helping it survive his high-speed movements. Spider-Man 2099 has remained a fan-favorite, thanks to his striking design, morally complex character, and the unique cyberpunk setting that sets him apart from the traditional Spider-Man mythos. He’s made several comebacks over the years, including cross-time adventures with the mainline Marvel Universe and more recent appearances in animated form, most notably in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse, where he plays a major role voiced by Oscar Isaac.

ACCESSORIES: 9/10

Mafex always packs a superlative amount of accessories with their figures. Oftentimes putting character specific specialty items in. This really helps to give the unique feel and flair to different iterations of a figure. The Spidey 2099 is a perfect example. He comes with:

  • Two Masked Head Sculpts. One with wider eye pieces, one with narrowed/angry eye pieces

  • One Partially Masked Head Sculpt. The bottom of the mask is pulled up to reveal his mouth and nose. Ideally, this is to show Miguel's fangs, but unless you look really closely, they are difficult to distinguish. I'll touch on this more in Appearance.

  • Two Pair of Feet: One Magnetic, One Plain.

  • Eight Pairs of Hands:

    • Fists

    • Web Gripping

    • Wall Crawling

    • Relaxed

    • Flat Palmed - "Karate Chop"

    • Grasping/Action Hands

    • Open/Fingers Spread Semi-Relaxed

    • Magnetic Wall Crawling

  • Two Pair of Web Wings (Both plug into slots on his arms)

  • Three Interchangeable Back Pieces. (Web Cape pieces plug into holes on each back piece.)

    • With Small Web Cape

    • With Larger Web Cape

    • With Two Piece Web Cape

  • Three Pairs of Web-Lines

    • One Pair of Short Thwipping lines

    • One Pair of Longer Thwipping lines

    • One Pair of Swinging Webs

  • One Mafex Standard Flight Stand With Multiple Waist Clamps

In spite of the fact that I enjoy the webbing that Mafex packages with their Spider-Man figures, it would be nice to see something new. The swinging lines could use an update as the 90 degree angle at the bottom really doesn't look that good any longer. I would love to see more of the webs that came with the Scarlet Spider figure, frankly. I elected to give the figure a nine here, based on the extra back plate pieces, the web cape sections, and the solid attention to detail on his hands... which I'll discuss next.

APPEARANCE: 9/10

This is a solid, solid representation of Spider-Man 2099. What really caught my eye upon initial inspection was the soft black shading prevalent over the figure. The blue body suit looks good on it's own, but the subtle shading really makes the figure stand out. The red paint is very nicely applied and is layered enough to prevent any blue from peeking through. I think the only thing I might have liked would have been a black wash over the web cape parts, just to make the webbing texture design a bit more visible.

I was impressed to see that each of his hands, except for the fists, have visible talons at the end of his fingers. As part of his genetic splicing, Miguel has the ability to deploy and retract talons at his fingertips and Mafex made sure to add the talon detail to the hands.

Looking at the partially unmasked face, you really have to study it up close to see the fangs. I wish they were just a bit more visible, but I suppose it's difficult simply due to the scale.

And, as you can see in the picture, there's just the slightest amount of fuzziness at the collar and neckline. For simply posing this around, it's hard to notice, but if you intend to take any close-up shots, it will be a distraction.

As far as the web capes are concerned, I'm not really sure which I'll display Spider-Man with. I like the larger cape, with the larger "web-wings" attached to the arms, but I may not keep him in a leaping pose. I appreciate the fact that all of the caps can hinge and swivel. That alone, helps give the figure more of a dynamic sense of action, even in a relatively vanilla pose. Replacing the back sections isn't terribly difficult. I found that if you grasp him at the seam where his lat muscles meet the front of his torso and put a finger at the base of his neck, you should have no issues sliding the back piece pegs free of their corresponding ports. Just keep the arms in a neutral position when putting the back piece on, so that you can snap it together tightly, otherwise you'll get some very unsightly seam gaps.

ARTICULATION: 9/10

As my regular readers know, I'm a fan of Mafex engineering. Sometimes though, there are slight issues, and I had a couple on mine. Let's go through the run down:

The head is on an angled ball peg, which should allow for increased range. However the narrowed eyes mask sits very tightly on the ball, which means the neck turns when I turn the head. I have to pinch the neck in order to move the head independently. That being said, the heads can look up and down nicely, and with the neck articulation, that range is increased.

The shoulders rotate easily and can raise to above a T pose. The butterfly joints are a bit stiff but will offer decent forward/backward range once loosened. The bicep swivel works fine, and the double-jointed elbows bend in fully, bringing hand to shoulder. The wrists all hinge and swivel.

The upper torso joint works really nicely, just be careful to have the back fully plugged in, otherwise you run the risk of pulling the figure apart. He can turn side to side, has a really good range of side tilt and can bend backward quite far. The forward crunch isn't the best, but when coupled with the lower waist joint, can get Spidey into a nice crunch position. The lower waist is how all action figures should be... on a ball joint which allows for rotation as well as forward and backward bending. This gives the figure a more natural, human-like range of motion.

The hips are on drop down pegs and can kick forward very high and does a much deeper split than it's Marvel Legends counterpart. There is a hidden thigh swivel, which allows for some rotation. The knees are double-jointed and can bend all the way back, bringing his calf muscle into contact with the back of his thigh.

The ankles have Mafex's normal engineering, allowing for decent up/down hinge, with the forward pin, giving generous ankle rocker. The toe articulation is standard and sturdy. I like toe artic, but once those joints get loose... it's near impossible to keep your figures in anything other than a flat-footed vanilla pose.

AFFORDABILITY: 7/10

As an import, we know the figure is going to be set at a higher cost. If you are buying from a U.S. based distributor, you're already dealing with mark-ups for resale and, of course, as the tariffs continue to impact the collector community, we'll have to keep an eye on prices. I picked this figure up at BBTS for the retail price of $104.99. It has since been increased to $124.99 if you are looking to get one.

Overall, the simple, yet elegant costume design, deco, accessories, and articulation make this a figure well worth adding to your collection. With the resurgence in popularity of Spider-Man 2099, thanks to the Spider-Verse movies, I think this figure is going to end up being sought after on the secondary market at some point. With all of that being said, I'm excited to give the Medicom Mafex #239 Spider-Man 2099 Action Figure:
